NCC has been commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration to construct the Tingstad interchange in central Gothenburg, comprising roads and bridges that are part of the Marieholm Connection Project. The order is worth SEK 633 million. “We are pleased to be involved in the improvements to Gothenburg’s challenging traffic situation. NCC aims to become a leader in infrastructure construction. The Tingstad interchange contains several complex elements that will confirm our expertise for major projects,” says Nils Bjelm, Head of the Civil Engineering segment at NCC Construction Sweden. The Tingstad interchange is one of the four subprojects of the Marieholm Connection Project, a new traffic link under the Göta Älv River. The Tingstad interchange is part of the E6 expressway, the arterial road between Gothenburg and Oslo. NCC will construct roads and bridges for the project, which are scheduled for completion in June 2020. The area is heavily trafficked with 80,000 vehicles passing every day. “A major challenge in the project is that the E6 expressway passes right through the construction area. Traffic will have to be re-routed to temporary roads during the construction period. We are placing major emphasis on noise suppression and our objective is to minimize disruptions for surrounding residents,” says Nils Bjelm. A total of approximately 35,000 tons of asphalt will be used during the project. This will be manufactured at the Kärraverket plant, one of NCC’s environmentally compatible asphalt plants, where the use of fossil fuels has been minimized and replaced by wood pellets, NCC Green fuel (http://www.ncc.se/hallbarhet/vart -miljoarbete/hallbara-koncept/greenfuels/). The asphalt from the existing E6 expressway will be recycled (http://www.ncc.se/produkter-och -tjanster/atervinning-av-asfalt/) and included in the new paving material and in other related projects. The project will be implemented as a turnkey contract and employ up to 50 individuals. Work will commence in January 2015 and is scheduled for completion on June 30, 2020. The order will be registered in the first quarter of 2015 in the NCC Construction Sweden business area.
