Housing investment company SATO is organising an architectural design competition together with the City of Helsinki in celebration of its 75th anniversary. The competition concerns a plot of land situated on Atlantinkatu street in the Jätkäsaari district of Helsinki. The aim of the competition is to gain new perspectives into sustainable living in view of future challenges and opportunities.
The property will contain SATO RentHomes and owner-occupied homes on Hitas housing price and quality control terms. The competition is hoped to deliver a feasible and setting-appropriate turnkey design of high architectural standard.
Six Nordic architectural firms have been invited to compete: Archeus (FI), Helen & Hard (NO), Huttunen Lipasti Pakkanen Architects (FI), JDS / Julien De Smeds Architects (DK, BE, CN), SeARCH (NL), Tham & Videgård Arkitekter (SE).

- With this competition, we wish to pay tribute to SATO’s proud heritage of innovative housing solutions. Invitations were extended to venturesome and versatile designers in hopes of obtaining fresh perspectives into the housing design of the future.
- In terms of property appearance, the architects’ creativity will be catered for within the confines of the town plan. It will be particularly interesting to see the participants’ proposals for the northeast corner of the plot, where the town plan envisions a 12-storey section that will rise above the rest of the block.
The competition runs from 1 July to 2 October. The jury consists of representatives of the City of Helsinki and SATO along with professor Markku Hedman and architect Anna Brunow representing the Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA). The jury is tentatively expected to deliver its decision by 13 November 2015.
The results of the competition will be announced at an award ceremony and the submissions as well as the jury report will be published on SATO’s website at www.sato.fi. The results of the competition will also be published in Arkkitehtiuutiset magazine and on the SAFA website at www.safa.fi.
Work on the detailed design is intended to start as soon as the winner has been announced.
