Celebrate, Don't Devastate, This Canada Day Holiday -- Plan a Sober Ride Home

OAKVILLE, ON--(Marketwired - June 29, 2015) - Planning ahead for a sober ride home can be the difference between Canada Day celebration and impaired driving devastation, say MADD Canada and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada.

"No one ever expects to cause a crash or to kill or injure someone, but if you get behind the wheel when you're impaired, that's what can happen," said MADD Canada National President Angeliki Souranis. "If your Canada Day celebrations include alcohol, please take steps to arrange for a sober ride home. Driving impaired is never worth the risk."

Every year, between than 1,250 and 1,500 Canadians are killed and more than 63,000 are injured in preventable impaired driving crashes. The risk for impaired driving is especially high on long weekends and throughout the summer months.

This Canada Day, and all summer long, look out for yourself and others by:

  • Never driving a car, boat, ATV or any other vehicle while impaired;
  • Never riding with a driver who is impaired;
  • Calling 911 to report suspected impaired drivers.

"Impaired driving takes a devastating toll on individuals, families and communities," said Allstate Canada President and Chief Executive Officer John O'Donnell. "But it doesn't have to be this way. If everyone makes responsible decisions, plans ahead and leaves the driving to someone sober, we can celebrate a happy Canada Day that is free from impaired driving and its consequences."
