ROAD SCHOLAR LAUNCHES LIFELONG LEARNING DAY ON OCTOBER 15TH TO SHARE RESEARCH AND EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES WITH LIFELONG LEARNERS

BOSTON, Oct. 13, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In honor of Road Scholar's outstanding and invaluable service to the advancement of lifelong learning, the United States Senate has provided special Congressional recognition of Road Scholar's inaugural National Lifelong Learning Day on Thursday, October 15th. That day will be a celebration of lifelong learning and Road Scholar will release its findings connecting learning with a happy and healthy older age, along with information about Lifelong Learning Institutes. Road Scholar will host Dr. Thomas T. Perls, director of the New England Centenarian Study and professor of medicine at Boston University, who will share data and stories about longevity from his study of New England's oldest living residents.

This year, Road Scholar celebrates its 40th Anniversary as the world's largest educational travel organization for adults and its role in the founding and development of Lifelong Learning Institutes across America.

"Road Scholar was at the forefront of the Lifelong Learning Movement, creating the expectation that learning is an essential activity to a healthy and happy older age and makes life richer," said James Moses, president and CEO of Road Scholar. "Through this day of recognition, we hope to build awareness and encourage communities to recognize that learning is the journey of a lifetime."

Road Scholar's research on the benefits of lifelong learning:

• Older individuals who participate in lifelong learning organizations and educational travel show levels of well-being and optimism about the future substantially above national averages.
• Members of Lifelong Learning Institutes and Road Scholar participants have attained levels of education substantially higher than national averages.
