TORONTO, Dec. 3, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Waddington's, Canada's largest and most diverse auction house, continues its fall 2015 season of major auctions representing important works from across the company's distinctive departments. Following our highly successful auctions in November, which featured Asian Art, Canadian Fine Art, Inuit Art and Fine Jewellery, our December live auctions include Decorative Arts and International Art. All live auctions are held at Waddington's Toronto gallery.
Decorative Arts & International Art – December 7, 2015
We are pleased to conclude our Fall 2015 Fine Art Auction season with this auction of over 260 lots of Decorative Arts and 80 lots of Fine International art.
The highlight of the Decorative Arts portion of the auction is an important piece by acclaimed Canadian silversmith Laurent Amiot. The Soup Tureen with the Arms of the Hertel de Rouville Family is one of only two that Amiot is known to have made during his career. It is significant both as an 18th century example of Canadian colonial silver and for its importance in the context of Amiot's oeuvre. This Canadian treasure tells its part of the story of life in Lower Canada, reflecting the broad range of styles and high level of sophistication that characterized silversmithing in Canada at the end of the 18th century. Likewise, with its strong ties to both English and French stylistic traditions, it occupies a significant place in early Canadian history. It carries a pre-sale estimate of CDN25,000—35,000.
The auction also features excellent examples of American, Canadian, English and Russian silver, including a Karl Fabergé silver mounted glass claret jug; several fine examples of Lalique glass, and nine lots of exquisite c1900 silver overlaid Loetz vases and caster, amongst other offerings of superb decorative arts.
Highlighting the International Art section of the auction is an impressive oil on canvas by Montague Dawson Clipper Ship "Thermopylae" Built in 1868 & 948 Tons also titled "Dawn and a West Wind" to the Watson Art Galleries label verso is accompanied by a William Notman and Son Limited (Montreal, CA) studio stamped black and white photo-certificate. Pre-sale estimate is CDN30,000—50,000.
We are also pleased to continue to offer works consigned to us by the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) as part of their strategy to refine and improve its collection. This auction includes a number of Old Master and 19th Century drawings.
Other highlights include an impressive large canvas by an artist from the circle of Sir Anthony Van Dyke, removed from the Collection of the Warwick House (London, UK) in 1906, depicting King Charles I's three children; a rare canvas by Denis Louis Bihan Niagara Falls, City of Buffalo in the Distance; and a heroic Francesco Coleman (1851-1918) battle scene of a richly costumed Bedouin cavalry charge, in addition to an impressive variety of works from across the globe.
