Semtech Demonstrates Industry’s First Certified Tri-Mode Wireless Charger at the AirFuel Alliance Members Meeting

CAMARILLO, Calif., May 19, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Semtech Corporation (Nasdaq:SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, demonstrated the industry’s first complete and self-contained tri-mode wireless charging transmitter at the AirFuel™ Alliance Members Meeting this week in Phoenix.

Semtech’s concept tri-mode wireless charging transmitter, which was announced early last year, has been certified by the AirFuel Alliance for both the inductive (formerly PMA) and resonant (formerly A4WP) standards, as well as Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) Qi standard. By supporting the two main industry standards, the chipset can help ensure compatibility with standards compliant portable electronics, smartphones and wireless charging sleeves.

The tri-mode charger supports two types of wireless charging technologies: inductive and resonant. With inductive technology, the receiver and transmitter coils require closer alignment, resulting in an efficient use of wireless power transfer. With resonant technology, close coupling of the receiver and transmitter coils are not required and can provide a higher degree of flexibility with the positioning of the receiver on the charger. This technology also allows for charging at a distance (Z-height).

“Until now, the differences between the two standards have made interoperability difficult to achieve. Semtech’s innovative, leading edge technology in tri-mode operation can truly simplify wireless charging for consumers allowing for an enhanced user experience,” said Ruwanga Dassanayake, Product Line Manager for Semtech’s Triune Product group.

The truly multi-standard support makes the solution ideal for a wide range of applications, including consumer mobile and desktop applications, infrastructure and hospitality, and automotive. The certified tri-mode solution was driven by a leading computer desktop manufacturer.

“We are very pleased to see Semtech’s demonstration of their tri-mode solution,” said Ron Resnick, President of the AirFuel Alliance. “The AirFuel Alliance’s flexible inductive and resonant standards give product designers options in creating innovative portable products. By supporting the AirFuel standard, Semtech’s wireless charging chipset will enable next generation devices that increasingly feature cordless charging capability.”

Key Features

  • Flexibility: The TS80K wireless charging platform supports both major wireless charging standards in multi-mode (for both transmitter and receiver applications), works in multiple configurations and form factors, and can quickly be adapted to support evolving wireless charging standards
  • Scalable Power: The TS80K platform is the only product on the market that supports a wide range of power solutions ranging from 100mW low power wearable solutions to 40W+ high power solutions for industrial tools, medical equipment and “connected” furniture applications
