Carolann Murphy Appointed to New Jersey Commission on Spinal Cord Research

Gubernatorial appointee to serve 3-year term

EAST HANOVER, N.J., Nov. 7, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Carolann Murphy, PA, was appointed to the New Jersey Commission on Spinal Cord Research by Governor Chris Christie. Murphy will serve a three-year term on the Commission, which was created in 1999 to promote advances in spinal cord injury care through the funding of approved research projects at qualifying research institutions in New Jersey. To augment these efforts, the Commission, in conjunction with the New Jersey Department of Health, also maintains a central registry of all spinal cord injuries in the state.

A graduate of the Yale University Physician Associate program, Murphy transitioned to medical communications, where she has applied her clinical background for more than 30 years. She is assistant editor of the Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine, the official journal of the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals, and communications manager at Kessler Foundation, which conducts rehabilitation research that addresses the physical and cognitive needs of people with disabilities, as well as obstacles to employment. Murphy's efforts include the dissemination of research conducted by the Northern New Jersey Spinal Cord Injury System, one of the 14 federally funded model systems in the nation.

"Through my work, I have developed a deep understanding of the nature of spinal cord injury and its impact on individuals, caregivers, and society. Impaired mobility is just the most evident effect. Research needs to address the spectrum of challenges that adversely affect the quality of life, including mobility, medical complications and barriers to employment, recreation, and transportation. The advances achieved in our state have the potential to improve quality of life for all people with SCI, and I am pleased to contribute to that effort."

Murphy resides in South Orange, NJ, where she and her husband Frank Rodino raised their three sons.
