Xcerra Corporation Introduces the mmWave Contactor

Revolutionary interface for extremely high frequency and tri-temp testing in high volume production

NORWOOD, Mass., Feb. 08, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Multitest business of Xcerra Corporation (Nasdaq:XCRA), today announces the introduction of the mmWave contactor, an innovative and robust, patent pending contacting solution for the testing of extremely high frequency semiconductors in high volume production environments.

Multitest engineers have developed a revolutionary hybrid contacting solution that combines traditional spring probe architecture (used for low frequency and power pins of a semiconductor device) and a coplanar waveguide cantilever solution (used for the peripheral high frequency transceiver pins). By combining spring probe and waveguide technologies Multitest has extended the reach of high volume production contactors to the extremely high frequency ranges needed by automotive radar, WiGig, and 5G devices. The mmWave contactor is able to maintain broadband performance from DC to 81GHz (<-10dB return loss and 4dB to 6dB insertion loss typical at 81GHz from tester interface to device). Furthermore, the mmWave contactor is designed and fabricated to withstand the extreme temperature environments associated with automotive tri-temp testing (-40°C, 25°C, and 145°C typical). The mmWave contactor is currently being used in high volume production manufacturing environments with multiple customers and has demonstrated contactor and component life of over 1 million insertions.

Timothy McNulty, vice president of Xcerra’s interface products group explains: “The increasing demand for extremely high frequency semiconductors has created a new challenge of how they are tested in high volume production. We relied on over thirty years of RF testing experience to come up with a solution to this problem. Before the introduction of Xcerra’s mmWave contactor there were only lab based solutions usable for low volume applications. The mmWave contactor is the first and only solution designed to support high volume production of these very high performance devices.”
