Media, Public Invited to Hear Sir Robert Francis Speak: British Public Health System Expert Has Lessons for Canada

CALGARY, Alberta, June 08, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Members of the media and the public are invited to attend a presentation by Sir Robert Francis, QC, at the Biennial Convention of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU).

Sir Robert Francis will speak at the TELUS Convention Centre on Friday June 9 from 9:30 to 10:30 am. The British barrister and medical specialist has played a prominent role in several regional and national inquiries into the quality of health care delivered by the UK’s National Health Service.

“As Canada’s health care system grapples with population growth, health human resources shortages and a push to provide more care at home and in the community, the lessons of the UK are useful for us,” notes CFNU President Linda Silas. “Sir Robert Francis has the experience and knowledge that can help us avoid some of the pitfalls experienced by the UK’s National Health Service.”

Also on the agenda for Friday: a rally by the almost 1,200 nurses from across Canada through the streets of Calgary.

“As patient advocates, CFNU members will be rallying for quality health care in Canadian communities. Canada’s nurses support public health care and will celebrate their 150 years of patient advocacy in Canada,” says Silas. The nurses will begin their march at 11:30 am at the TELUS Convention Centre and wind their way through the streets of the city to Municipal Plaza.

The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) is Canada’s largest nurses’ organization representing nearly 200,000 nurses and student nurses. The CFNU has been advocating for national discussions on key health priorities, such as a national prescription drug plan, a comprehensive approach to long-term and continuing care, greater attention to health human resources, and federal government engagement on the future of public health care.
