UZA, UZ Gent and AZ Sint-Lucas Gent select Cerner for their new EHR projects

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 16, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The University Hospitals of Antwerp (UZA), Gent (UZ Gent) and St. Lucas Hospital Gent (AZ Sint-Lucas Gent) have selected Cerner, a global leader in health care technology, to integrate their electronic health record (EHR).

This is the first step in the realization of eHealth in Belgium, as the sector undergoes transformation. Aging populations and the shift from acute to chronic complex care mean that Belgian health care institutions need to be more efficient while providing better quality care at the same time.

Preparing for the future with Cerner

Together with Cerner, UZA and UZ Gent will start their EHR projects immediately, and AZ Sint-Lucas Gent will follow in the coming months. All three hospitals have chosen Cerner Millennium® as the EHR for the Flemish market. Millennium provides flexible architecture and comprehensive integrated functionalities that fully aligns with the needs of the hospitals, its care providers and patients. Additionally, Cerner offers a strategic and reliable cooperation with a global company that also has local presence and expertise.

Millennium gathers patients’ medical data digitally, which includes medical history, diagnosis, treatment, appointments, medical imaging, lab results, allergies and other relevant data about a patient.  The system can suggest necessary tests and alert the staff about allergy interactions and sepsis, which enables physicians to make the best clinical care decisions for their patients

"We are honored that UZA, UZ Gent and St. Lucas have chosen to align with Cerner,” said Cor Rumping, general manager, Cerner Belgium and Netherlands. “Our main focus throughout these projects will be to enable better and safer care for the patients of the regions. We look forward to supporting the needs of all three hospitals and their communities today and helping prepare them for the future.”

What our clients have to say

"With the new EHR, the interaction between patient and doctor will become very dynamic,” said Guy Hans, chief medical officer of UZA. “For the continuity of care, the patient's follow-up at home or at work will become increasingly important. Data about the patient's condition will be collected via telemonitoring and medical grade wearables. If the data are abnormal, the doctor will report and contact the patient."

"With the new Cerner EHR we are preparing for the future,” said Christiaan Polet, chief information officer of the UZ Gent. “We choose a big bang approach, which will help with the continuity of care. Together with Cerner, we will organize that transition down to the smallest detail.”

"To provide quality care, everyone must have the right information at the right place at the right time,” said Dr. Filip Veldeman, assistant medical director and chief medical information officer of AZ Sint-Lucas Gent. “The new EHR solution helps to achieve this level of quality and enables an easy communication between all involved care providers and patients. Together with Cerner, we can focus on getting the new technological capabilities quickly to the patient and support efficient care."

Cerner’s local partners

To deliver UZA, UZ Gent and AZ Sint-Lucas Gent projects, Cerner is aligning with the Belgian software companies Amaron and Besco. These two companies will bring local knowledge and expertise to the projects regarding the Belgian regulations. Amaron around data exchange between IT systems and eHealth services platforms and Besco around the use of the correct terminology for billing and medication.

“We are extremely proud that Amaron and Besco have chosen to collaborate with Cerner,” said Rob Reijn, director, Cerner Belgium and Netherlands. “This cooperation will give Amaron and Besco access to our international expertise. At the same time, Cerner will learn and benefit from their experience and knowledge of the local market.”
