Firm Becomes One of Only Four Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) to Provide USDA-Approved Transmittal Letter of J335 Compliance

LITTLETON, Mass., Oct. 19, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- TÜV Rheinland, a leading global testing service provider, today announced it has become accredited by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to test outdoor power equipment for compliance with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J335 requirements for spark arrestor testing. Included with the accreditation, TÜV Rheinland becomes one of only four firms in the United States authorized to provide clients with a USDA-approved transmittal letter to prove their compliance.

SAE J335 testing applies to any small engine exhaust system found in equipment used for forestry, turf care and other landscaping purposes. The equipment comprises all varieties of chainsaws, brush cutters, and debris blowing equipment. J335 spark arrestor testing acts as a fire prevention measure to prevent the possibility of stray engine sparks igniting surrounding material.

“Many manufacturers of outdoor power equipment, even if they understand the J335 regulation, have limited capabilities and expertise to conduct testing on an appropriate and expedited basis,” said Scott Kendall, senior engineer at TÜV Rheinland. “Combined with our range of existing services outdoor power equipment, TÜV Rheinland not only helps manufacturers get products to market more quickly, but also demonstrates our ongoing commitment to making the world a safer place.”
