Money Matters celebrates milestone of 10,000 learners reached through community-based workshops

TORONTO, Oct. 25, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ABC Life Literacy Canada (ABC) is celebrating Financial Literacy Month with Money Matters workshops across Canada.  Community organizations will be hosting workshops throughout November to bring financial literacy programming to their learners. With this year’s workshops, Money Matters has reached a milestone of 10,000 adult learners since its inception in 2011.

In November, ABC will also launch the new Money Matters Online, a self-directed learning experience where learning takes place where you are, and at your own pace. Users can work through activities on the topics of banking and saving as well as learn about creating spending plans. Money Matters Online will provide financial literacy programming to those in remote areas who are not able to attend a workshop.

“Everyone should have the skills, knowledge and confidence to make the best financial decisions for their family and their future,” said Mack Rogers, Executive Director of ABC Life Literacy Canada. “Money Matters is a direct response to that need and we’re grateful to TD Bank Group for their continued support, which has allowed us to bring the program to more learners and more communities every year.”

Money Matters teaches learners financial literacy fundamentals like building credit, establishing spending plans and saving for education or retirement. It is taught in community centres, classrooms and literacy organizations by TD volunteer tutors.

The original suite of workshops led to the creation of programs adapted specifically to the needs of newcomers and new Canadians, Indigenous Peoples and post-secondary students. Money Matters is available in English and French, and the newcomers and new Canadians modules are also available in Arabic.

ABC will launch its celebration of Financial Literacy Month with a special workshop hosted by community partner Place Cartier Adult Education Centre in Beaconsfield, Quebec on October 31, 2017. A workshop with the Native Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto on November 30, 2017 in Toronto, Ontario will celebrate the end of Financial Literacy Month.
