TORONTO, Nov. 07, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Professional services firm Deloitte Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of three Independent Directors to its Board of Directors, Hon. David Emerson, Marie-Lucie Morin and Hon. Michael Wilson, effective November 30th, 2017.

Chair of Deloitte Canada Glenn Ives said that appointing Independent Directors is a first for the Canadian firm and marks a bold evolution of the firm’s governance model.

About the Independent Directors

David Emerson

The Honourable David Emerson brings extensive management and governance experience having held CEO positions and has served on both public and private Boards. David was President and CEO of Canfor Corporation; President and CEO of the Vancouver International Airport Authority; and Chairman and CEO of Canadian Western Bank. David’s Board positions included Chair of Global Container Terminals Inc., Maple Leaf Foods and TimberWest Forest Corporation, as well as Director positions on the Board of New Gold, Telus and Finning International. 

David also has had a distinguished career in public service at both the federal and provincial levels of government. Nationally, he has held several senior positions with the Government of Canada as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Industry and Minister of International Trade. In British Columbia, David was the Province’s Deputy Minister of Finance, Secretary to the Treasury Board, Deputy Minister to the Premier and Secretary to Cabinet.

In February 2017, he was named the Province of British Columbia’s Trade Envoy to the United States. David is a member of the Privy Council of Canada and a recipient of the Order of British Columbia.

Marie-Lucie Morin

Marie-Lucie Morin has served on Corporate Boards including: Stantec, AGT Foods, Chorus, TimberWest as well as not-for-profit Boards, such as the Asia Pacific Foundation, Génome Québec, Développement International Desjardins, and the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. She was an advisor to the Canada Transportation Act review panel and is currently a member of the Security Intelligence Review Committee.

Marie-Lucie was Executive Director for Canada, Ireland and the Caribbean at the World Bank from 2010 to 2013. Before joining the World Bank she pursued a 30-year career in the Federal Public Service and was appointed National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister and Associate Secretary to the Cabinet in 2008.  Previously she served as Deputy Minister for International Trade and as Associate Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. During the earlier years of her career with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Marie-Lucie completed assignments in San Francisco, Jakarta, London, and Moscow. In 1997, she was appointed Ambassador to the Kingdom of Norway with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Iceland. She was awarded the Governor General’s 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal and was named Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 2012. In 2016, she became a member of the Order of Canada. 

Michael Wilson

The Honourable Michael H. Wilson served as Chairman of Barclays Capital Canada Inc., is currently responsible for managing Barclays Capital's client relationships in Canada and was Chairman of UBS Canada, an operating division of UBS AG. He is also serving his second consecutive term as the Chancellor of the University of Toronto.

A distinguished career in both the public and private sector, Michael was elected to the House of Commons in 1979. He was appointed Minister of Finance and then became Minister of Industry, Science and Technology and Minister for International Trade whereby he had responsibility for the NAFTA negotiations. During his tenure as a member of the Cabinet, Mr. Wilson represented Canada at the G-7, IMF, World Bank, OECD, GATT and other international Ministers meetings. From 2006 to 2009, Michael was Ambassador of Canada to the United States of America. Additionally, Michael served as a Vice Chairman of RBC Dominion Securities, responsible for senior client relationships and advice to both Canadian and international companies and governments and was responsible for RBC Financial Group's Institutional Asset Management business.

Prior to his career in public life, Michael’s career was in investment banking with various responsibilities in corporate, government and international finance. He was also Director of a number of companies including BP plc and Manulife Financial.

Michael has been active in a number of professional and community organizations, including Brain Canada, The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships and the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance. He has received a number of awards for his work as an advocate for mental health, as well as from The Conference Board of Canada, The Public Policy Forum and The Rotman School of Business. Mr. Wilson is a Companion of the Order of Canada and a member of the Privy Council of Canada.
