FISHERS, Ind., Nov. 15, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Navient employees in Fishers raised more than $250,000 during the company’s annual fundraising campaign to support United Way of Central Indiana, a nonprofit organization that fights for the education, financial stability, health and basic needs of every person in the community.

For two weeks, approximately 1,000 employees voluntarily pledged donations to United Way in an amount of their choosing, opting to pay upfront or through payroll deductions. Additionally, the Navient team will continue to support United Way with a variety of engagement activities throughout the year.

“United Way of Central Indiana is grateful for the continued support of Navient employees and applaud their commitment to addressing our community’s most critical problems,” said Ann Murtlow, president and CEO, United Way of Central Indiana. “This is a great example of individuals stepping up to be the hand raisers and game changers our neighbors need to achieve self-sufficiency.”

To kickstart the annual fundraiser, Navient hosted a carnival-themed “Agency Fair” event at its facility in Fishers where staff members snacked on popcorn, pretzels and cotton candy and visited booths of eight United Way agencies to learn about community engagement opportunities. Navient staff in attendance also competed to win various prizes that were raffled at the event.

In addition, the company hosted a theme-filled “Spirit Week” to promote awareness of the cause, where employees could wear their favorite Halloween costume, t-shirt or dress up in Navient attire.

“It’s exciting to connect the dedication, enthusiasm and generosity of our employees with local United Way agencies to give back to the community,” said Eric Johnson, senior director, Navient. “Central Indiana is a better place because of United Way and the organizations that work tirelessly to help those in need. This is our way of saying thank you.”

Celebrating its 100th anniversary next year, United Way of Central Indiana, with the help of agency partners, seeks to ensure 90 percent of local high school students graduate on time by 2021 and to reduce the childhood obesity rate by 12 percent by 2025 in central Indiana, among other goals to benefit the community.
