Canadians across the country supporting literacy through the Scotiabank Giller Light Bash

Canada’s most popular alternative Giller party supports national literacy organization, Frontier College

Toronto, Nov. 17, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- On November 20, over 1,500 Canadian book lovers will gather to learn which author will win the 2017 Scotiabank Giller Prize at Scotiabank Giller Light Bash events across the country. From what began as a small get-together in 2002, the Scotiabank Giller Light Bash has grown into a popular arts event featuring authors, publishers, and past Scotiabank Giller Prize jurors, and winners. Hosted in seven major cities—Vancouver, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Toronto, and Halifax—the Bash combines a taste of the Scotiabank Giller Prize Gala ceremony with a hip, urban twist. Tickets can be purchased at gillerlightbash.ca.

Now in its 16th year, the fundraiser continues to raise awareness for literacy through an entertaining evening featuring a live broadcast of the Scotiabank Giller Prize. Guests will participate in “Guess the Giller” contests, and hear local personalities advocate for their chosen nominated book. All proceeds from the events support Frontier College and provide essential literacy programs for children, youth and adults in 165 communities in Canada.

“Events such as the Scotiabank Giller Light Bash help raise awareness and provide funding for an issue that touches millions of Canadians,” says Stephen Faul, president, Frontier College. “For many, reading a great piece of literature can easily be taken for granted. At Frontier College, we help bring literacy support to those who need it most; from working with children to expand their vocabularies and increase their love of reading, to highlighting the different ways literacy impacts other serious issues facing Canadians.”

While the Scotiabank Giller Light Bash supports an important issue, the night promises to be a memorable celebration. “Scotiabank is proud to continue our support of Canadian fiction through the Scotiabank Giller Prize,” says Gallant Law, Director of Sponsorships at Scotiabank. “We have a deep and long-time commitment to supporting the arts in Canada and are focused on helping to build a stronger future for young people across the country. That’s why we support organizations such as Frontier College.”
