Celebrating a successful first national year of Money Matters for Indigenous Peoples and the close of Financial Literacy Month

Toronto, ON, Nov. 30, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ABC Life Literacy Canada (ABC) is celebrating the end of a successful first year of its national program Money Matters for Indigenous Peoples and the close of Financial Literacy Month. Indigenous organizations across Canada ran Money Matters for Indigenous Peoples workshops throughout the month, helping their learners build confidence in their ability to manage their finances and work to achieve their financial goals with the right tools.

“This year, Money Matters for Indigenous Peoples was released nationally, to eager demand,” said Mack Rogers, Executive Director of ABC Life Literacy Canada. Research shows that Indigenous people living off reserve are especially susceptible to financial stress and face specific challenges that must be addressed head-on by life skills and literacy programs. “We are very proud of the impact Money Matters has had on learners and we’re excited to continue growing the program by making it more accessible and adapting it to the needs of underserved communities.”

Money Matters for Indigenous Peoples debuted in 2016 as a pilot program tailored to the needs of Indigenous communities in Ontario. Since its inception, the program has reached 1,976 learners to date through 141 workshops.

Money Matters teaches learners financial literacy fundamentals like building credit, establishing spending plans and saving for education or retirement. Thanks to founding sponsor TD Bank Group (TD) and the work of hundreds of TD volunteer tutors, the Money Matters suite of programs has reached over 10,000 learners since its inception in 2011. This Financial Literacy Month, 166 Money Matters workshops were held in communities across Canada, reaching over 2,000 learners.
