College students have many factors that place them at risk for substance abuse. College students have access to many types of drugs, and often partake in underage drinking and binge drinking. Also for many of the students, it’s their first time living away from home without their parent’s supervision, with lots of new freedom. Sometimes this opens the door for college students to make poor choices that they may not have made in the past.
College can bring stress and depression that many students have not experienced before and could turn to drugs or alcohol to cope.
