European CEO magazine explores Europe’s lingua franca, minimalism in business, and more

LONDON, Dec. 18, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In the latest edition of European CEO magazine, journalist Kim Darrah examines whether the English language could soon die out as the lingua franca for EU member states.

After all, following the Brexit vote, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said, “Slowly but surely, English is losing its importance in Europe.”

A decline has already been witnessed; as reported by English UK, the national association of accredited English language centres, the number of students from Western Europe enrolling in English courses dropped by 10 percent in 2016.

Is it time to say goodbye to English across the continent and bonjour to French instead? Or perhaps, Darrah writes, we could see the ratification of Euro-English, a version of English with its own European take on spellings, phrasing and syntax, which is fast gaining popularity.

Later on, Elizabeth Matsangou explores the rising trend of minimalism. While the idea of ‘less being more’ has permeated many a millennial household, it is also making waves in the corporate world. Its advocates argue that bigger isn’t always better when it comes to business, while stripping back on unnecessary processes, products and company offshoots could see greater value for customers and business owners alike.

Elsewhere in the magazine, Barclay Ballard explores the ultra-exclusive and always-intriguing World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland, and what’s likely to be on the agenda in 2018.
