EDISON, N.J., Dec. 20, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- On December 8th, the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters (NRCC) selected Local 164 Member Ted Brophy as the 2017 Citizen Carpenter of the Year for his continued service to the community.
The Citizen Carpenter Award recognizes a NRCC member who has performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or citizens. This year’s recipient, Ted Brophy, received the award because of his dedicated commitment to the community on a myriad of projects.
“The Citizen Carpenter Award was created to recognize a Union Carpenter who has performed exemplary deeds in their community,” said John Ballantyne, NRCC Executive Secretary-Treasurer. “Ted Brophy epitomizes this mantra fully and has worked tirelessly to devote his free time to help people in his community.”
Over the last year, Brophy has dedicated his time to replacing all of the concrete walkways at the Charles. J. Glenn Memorial Monument in Philadelphia, PA. This monument was the first Vietnam War Memorial built in the United States. Brophy also spent countless hours after work, in the evening and on weekends rebuilding Costello’s Boxing Club in the Tacony section of Philadelphia. Costello’s provides underprivileged children with a place to train and be mentored free of charge.
“As a Union Carpenter, I believe it’s my duty to give back to the communities that have given so much to me,” said Brophy. “I’m a 30-year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America and have worked hard to mentor the next generation of union carpenters the importance of working together to build stronger communities and be a shining example of what it means to be a union carpenter.”
