Clean Eating for the New Year - Dentist Doug Disraeli Gives Dental Tips for a Healthy Mouth When Starting a New Diet

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 29, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With words like “orthorexia” and “clean eating” recently added to the Merriam Webster dictionary, Hillcrest dentist Dr. Doug Disraeli gives tips for living up to New Year’s resolutions in 2018 while trying out some of the newer clean eating trends.

Clean Eating – A reduction in processed foods and elimination of “ultra-processed” foods. When engaging in this resolution you may increase intake in nuts, seeds, beans and legumes, all high in phosphorus, and an essential nutrient for tooth structure.

Ketogenic - A low carb, high fat, protein rich diet. If engaging in this option, try to get some of your fats from fish oils to reduce gum inflammation, keep your protein intake high for tooth structure, and your calcium high for your enamel.

Whole 30 - A 30-day diet change that eliminates many foods including simple sugars, which will help keep your teeth healthy.

Juice Cleanse - Folate is found in many fruits and is especially high in leafy greens popular in juice cleanses. High levels of this nutrient have been associated with less periodontal disease.

But while resolutions can be encouraging, fun, or a great way to try new things, Dr. Disraeli warns against taking any new trend to the extreme, as research has shown that it can create health or financial stress, especially sometimes on younger people. Says Dr. Disraeli, “There are ways to meet all your dental health needs with or without these specific diet resolutions.”
