Money Matters empowers newcomers and new Canadians to start the New Year in control of their finances

Toronto, ON, Jan. 09, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ABC Life Literacy Canada (ABC) is ringing in the New Year with Money Matters for Newcomers and New Canadians, a financial literacy program for Canada’s newcomer community. The program, which is taught at community learning centres across the country, helps learners to navigate the Canadian banking system, learn how to save and build credit. The program also enables learners to set financial goals and develop the skills and confidence to reach them.

Since its inception in 2015, Money Matters for Newcomers and New Canadians has reached nearly 4,000 learners across the country with workshops in English, French, and Arabic. The program is part of the Money Matters suite of financial literacy programming developed by ABC with support from Founding Sponsor TD Bank Group (TD). TD volunteer-tutors also work with community learning centres to deliver the workshops to learners.

“We’re proud of the impact Money Matters for Newcomers and New Canadians has had and we’re grateful to TD Bank Group for enabling us to develop new and innovative ways to reach learners,” said Mack Rogers, Executive Director of ABC Life Literacy Canada. “Helping newcomers adapt to Canada’s banking system and learn about credit and the resources available to them is an essential step in their success.”

Last November, during Financial Literacy Month, one workbook from Money Matters for Newcomers and New Canadians was released as an online learning module through Money Matters Online. Learners who may not have access to a local learning centre can access the self-directed learning tool at Online.ABCMoneyMatters.ca to undertake the program at their own pace.

ABC also worked with Agincourt Community Services Association Newcomers' Centre for Syrian Refugees, in response to requests from Lifeline Syria, to hold the first Arabic adaptation of the program in Toronto last May. The workshop was tailored specifically to the needs of the Arabic-speaking refugee community and delivered by TD volunteers who led the group through workshops in the learners' native Arabic.
