Ochsner Health System to Access State of Louisiana’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Data within its Epic Electronic Health Records via Appriss Health’s PMP Gateway Solution

Accessing PDMP Data in Clinical Workflow Helps Ochsner Prescribers and Pharmacists to Identify, Prevent and Manage Substance Use Disorder

Louisville, KY, Jan. 09, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --

Appriss Health, provider of the most comprehensive platform for substance use disorder in the U.S., today announced it has executed an agreement with Ochsner Health System, one of the largest independent academic health systems in the U.S. and Louisiana’s largest not-for-profit health system,       to enable integration of state prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) information directly into its Epic electronic health records (EHRs) via Appriss Health’s PMP Gateway solution. PMP Gateway is a managed service that enables access to PDMP data, analytics, resources and more within real-time care team workflows to help make more informed clinical decisions at the point-of-care.

Clinicians will now be able to access a patient’s prescription history directly within their Epic EHR system at Ochsner. Prior to working with Appriss Health, physicians and pharmacists needed to log into a separate website to retrieve a patient’s controlled substance dispensations from the state database and then cross-reference that data with a patient’s health information – a very time-consuming process.

“The purpose of this important initiative is to provide near-instant and seamless access to critical prescription information to all prescribers and pharmacists across our health system. By doing this, we are creating a more complete picture of our patients as we make better informed clinical decisions about their appropriate medical treatment, while engaging in more ‘real’ conversations with our patients about their health and well-being,” said Debbie Simonson, Pharm.D., Vice President of Pharmacy Services, Ochsner Health System. “We know that the PDMP has proven to be an effective tool for helping to stop the disease of addiction before it can start.”

“As we strive to build a culture of patient safety and continued quality improvement at Ochsner, we believe that PMP Gateway will help to increase overall utilization of PDMP information. And, that integrating PDMP information into clinical workflow helps to ensure that medication is prescribed safely and patients are properly cared for,” said Richard D. Guthrie, Jr., M.D., C.P.E., Chief Quality Officer, Ochsner Health System. “We know that Louisiana is the sixth-highest opioid prescribing state in the U.S. However, this is not a ‘do not prescribe project.’ This is about best managing our patients, their pain and mitigating their risk. We trust that this critical initiative can and will effectively improve and save lives across all of the communities that we serve.”

PDMP data, analytics and more are now integrated into physician and pharmacist workflow through EHRs and pharmacy management systems in 32 states via Appriss Health’s PMP Gateway solution. And, 25 million transactions are now being completed per month on PMP Gateway. PMP Gateway is the industry standard for supporting efficient and secure real-time access to PDMP data and analytics directly within clinical workflow. PMP Gateway’s single point of connection helps states support PDMP integration best practices to include:

  • Secure and efficient access and technology for practitioners, pharmacists and other PDMP users
  • 24/7 technical support
  • Native integrations with all leading EHR and pharmacy management systems
  • Access to multi-state PDMP data within workflow
  • On-demand, detailed audit trail access
  • Self-service configuration for custom PDMP rules/regulations
  • Verification of user registration with PDMP
  • NarxCare substance use disorder platform

“We are very pleased to have earned the opportunity to partner with Ochsner Health System in Louisiana, an innovative organization with superior leadership and vision, to help them take a critical step toward addressing substance use disorder within the many communities they serve statewide,” said Rob Cohen, President, Appriss Health. “We applaud the efforts of Ochsner’s administrators and clinicians working so closely together to get PMP Gateway live to help address the scourge of the prescription drug and opioid epidemic in Louisiana.”

Arizona, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia have implemented a statewide program to integrate PDMP data into clinical workflow through the single connection point of PMP Gateway.
