IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 08, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The University of California, Irvine Division of Continuing Education announces the tenth annual “Gifted and Talented Education Webinar Series,” which will be held weekly from March 7 through March 28. Led by Gifted and Talented Education leaders, the webinar series is designed to provide teachers, administrators and parents with the tools needed to create and maintain successful educational programs while addressing the challenges the GATE community faces. For educators who participate in the full series, there will be an option to receive credit.
“UCI Division of Continuing Education is committed to the continued development of students and educators in the GATE community,” said Angela Jeantet, director of education and business programs at UC Irvine Division of Continuing Education. “The weekly webinar series provides a teacher focused program that gives educators the tools needed to maximize the potential of gifted learners.”
Four leading GATE educators and professionals who have dedicated their life and career to better the educational opportunity for students will host the webinar series. Feature presentations include:
- Powerful Strategies to Enhance Learning of Gifted and Highly Able Students – (Wednesday, March 7, from 4-5 p.m. PST) – Nathan Levy explores various proven methods to reach gifted learners and help them become better critical and creative thinkers.
- Genius Hour – (Wednesday, March 14, from 4-5 p.m. PST) – Dive into an area of interest and create a “Passion Project.” This introductory webinar led by Patricia Chiles focuses on tapping into student motivation and interests.
- Depth and Complexity Prompts – What Do I Do with These?!? – (Wednesday, March 21, from 4-5 p.m. PST) – Begin incorporating high levels of thinking across all subject matters. Krista Landgraf leads this webinar that presents both new and old prompts and strategies in how to use them in a GATE classroom.
- Backwards Planning: The Cure for Procrastination – (Wednesday, March 28, from 4-5 p.m. PST) – Victoria Olivadoti outlines the “Backwards Planning” approach as a way to assist students in creating a sense of urgency when dealing with assignments and group projects.
To receive one quarter unit of credit from UC Irvine Division of Continuing Education, participants must attend all four live webinars (total of four hours) and then submit a three-page reflection paper. The reflection will include a summary of what was learned at each webinar while explaining how the lessons can be incorporated into constructive teaching techniques. Additionally, participants must submit a one- to two-page lesson plan that highlights strategies from a single webinar. The deadline for submission (for credit) is April 23. Credit will not be given for watching recordings of the webinars.
The UC Irvine Division of Continuing Education Gifted and Talented Education Specialized Studies program provides K-12 teachers with the latest strategies for curricular differentiation. Through focused professional development sessions and online courses aligned with the California Association for the Gifted (CAG), the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) and state standards for excellence, teachers can grow alongside the evolving GATE community.
