Fujifilm Releases Stabilized X-H1 Camera and MKX Cine Lenses

Photography News: Fujifilm has released its best X Series camera yet—the X-H1, a 24.3MP model with in-body image stabilization and advanced video specs. Along with the camera was the official reveal of the MKX 18-55mm and 50-135mm cinema zooms.

NEW YORK, Feb. 15, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --

B&H Photo would like to share the announcement of the Fujifilm X-H1 Mirrorless Digital Camera and the Fujinon MKX18-55mm T2.9 and MKX50-135mm T2.9 Lenses. By releasing these together, Fujifilm has made it clear that the company is going to target the video market aggressively by offering highly capable and feature-rich cameras. The obvious improvement with the X-H1 is the implementation of a 5-axis in-body image stabilization, a first for the mirrorless X Series and something that will greatly appeal to filmmakers, especially those who prefer a run-and-gun style. It also retains the excellent X-Processor Pro Engine and 24.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS III sensor used in the X-T2 for reliable performance, though with some tweaks to deliver better image quality and video specs. This includes the ability to record DCI 4K video at a bit rate of 200 Mbps at 24.00 fps, as well as F-Log recording directly to an SD card. Full HD recording is much faster too, with a maximum frame rate of 120 fps, perfect for slow-motion shooting.

  • 24.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS III Sensor
  • X-Processor Pro Engine
  • 5-Axis In-Body Image Stabilization
  • Internal DCI 4K Video and F-Log Gamma
  • 0.75x 3.69m-Dot Electronic Viewfinder
  • 3" 1.04m-Dot 3-Way Tilt LCD Touchscreen
  • 325-Point Intelligent Hybrid AF System
  • 1080p at 120 fps; Flicker Reduction Mode
  • 1.28" Sub-LCD Top Screen
  • Weather-Sealed Body; Two UHS-II SD Slots

The major feature here is the inclusion of 5-axis in-body stabilization, a first for Fujifilm’s X Series and a hotly anticipated addition to the system. Even though it is the first time implementing it, Fujifilm has managed to reach an impressive maximum of 5.5 stops. Also, photographers will be given the choice of using an electronic front curtain or fully electronic shutter to eliminate the effects of shutter shock and vibrations. Another brand-new addition to Fujifilm’s mirrorless line is a flicker reduction mode, which helps minimize exposure fluctuations when shooting under difficult fluorescent and mercury fixtures. This isn’t all that has been improved, because shooters will enjoy a variety of operability improvements, as well. One such improvement is a near-silent mechanical shutter that will make the camera more suitable for sound-sensitive environments. The 325-point Intelligent Hybrid AF System makes its return, though with improved continuous autofocus performance, the ability to use phase-detect points at f/11, and better low-light operation.

Fujifilm boasts that the X-H1 offers more durable construction, with dust- and water resistance and freezeproofing down to 14°F. The body has a more substantial grip, and the magnesium alloy is now 25% thicker. The three-direction 3.0" 1.04m-dot tilting LCD now has full touch function, which makes it easier to adjust focus points in live view and video recording. For clearer views, a higher-res 0.75x 3.69m-dot EVF is available with a lag of just 0.005 seconds and a refresh rate of 100 fps. There is even now a 1.28" sub LCD on the top, much like the GFX, for quickly checking settings. Other improvements include a leaf-spring switch for the shutter release, an AF-ON button, and larger rear buttons. Another update with the X-H1 is the ETERNA film simulation mode, bringing back the look of some of Fujifilm’s classic motion picture film with understated colors and rich shadow tones.

Being released with the camera is the VPB-XH1 Vertical Power Booster Grip, a dedicated grip that holds two extra batteries, offers vertical-orientation controls, and boosts performance of key specifications. These performance enhancements include faster burst shooting rates and reduced shutter lag in boost mode, as well as increasing the maximum recording time for 4K to 30 minutes. Also, the grip features a 3.5mm headphone socket for monitoring audio and can be used to charge multiple batteries simultaneously. You can pick up the grip right away in a Fujifilm-made kit that includes the X-H1 and Grip. Another accessory being made available is the EC-XH W Wide Eyecup, which works with select X Series and GFX cameras. This alternative eyecup is larger, making it more effective at blocking light, and it can be rotated in 90° increments for more comfortable shooting in various positions and with different eyes.

In addition to the camera, Fujifilm has announced a pair of cinema zooms for the X mount—another first. The MKX18-55mm T2.9 and MKX50-135mm T2.9 are designed for professional filmmaking applications, and offer versatile equivalent zoom ranges of 27-84mm and 76-206mm, respectively. The real appeal of these optics is their plethora of video-specific features, including standard 0.8 MOD gears, a consistent 85mm front diameter, and a long 200° rotation for the focus ring. The optical design of both lenses is set up to have minimal focus breathing, allowing for smooth focus pulls. Additionally, the MKX series features an electronic X mount, enabling automatic image corrections when mounted on a compatible camera.
