LOS ANGELES, Feb. 15, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Los Angeles engagement of Cirque du Soleil’s delightfully-imaginative and visually-stunning production LUZIA came to an end this past Sunday, February 11 after a successful series of performances. Since the December 8 opening of LUZIA at Dodger Stadium, Cirque du Soleil estimates having produced 532 tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) to generate electricity that powers its show equipment and temporary installations. Committed to reducing its environmental footprint in the communities it visits, Cirque du Soleil is happy to have partnered locally with terrapass to offset the GHG emissions of LUZIA in Los Angeles.
Through terrapass, Cirque du Soleil purchased the equivalent of 532 tons of GHG in carbon offsets that will be used in the funding of Improved Forest Management Projects. This is equivalent to the addition of 627 acres of US forest in one year.
“At Cirque du Soleil, our commitment goes beyond the performance. We aim to positively impact people, communities and the planet with what we know best: creativity and art,” says Jean-François Michaud, Senior Social Responsibility Advisor for Cirque du Soleil. “Reducing the environmental footprint of our operations is a core pillar of our actions globally.”
“Given the immense popularity of Cirque du Soleil, we’re proud to help them take action to reduce the carbon footprint associated with their spectacular shows,” says Duncan Stiles, SVP, terrapass. “A terrific example to emulate in the entertainment space, Cirque du Soleil is making a real and tangible impact by offsetting the amount of GHG emissions that it cannot reduce entirely on its own, as well as harnessing the power of the sun to leverage natural renewable resources as part of the sustainability equation.”
For perspective, an individual’s carbon footprint is reduced by the equivalent amount of carbon offsets purchased from emission reduction projects. Every 1,000lbs of carbon offsets purchased destroys greenhouse gases equal to 1,000lbs of carbon dioxide.
In addition to offsetting GHG emissions, Cirque du Soleil was proud to present LUZIA under a lighter-colored Big Top. Unlike the trademark blue-and-yellow Big Tops that have come through Los Angeles in the past 30 years, LUZIA’s white-and-gold canvas reflects the sun's rays, which reduces the show’s air-conditioning energy needs by 40% and helps control the temperature between the stage and the cupola. In addition to reducing energy consumption, this new tent design improves the well-being of artists and employees and better supports the artistic quality of the show.
LUZIA by Cirque du Soleil is moving on to the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa from February 21 – March 25. For more information, visit www.cirquedusoleil.com/luzia.
