Altiostar and Sercomm announce collaboration in development of an advanced LTE and 5G solution on CBRS band for Rural Broadband and Fixed Wireless applications

TAIPEI, Taiwan and TEWKSBURY, Mass., Feb. 26, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Sercomm, a leading manufacturer of telecom and broadband equipment and Altiostar, the pioneer of open vRAN solution announced today the completion of a successful field trial of an end to end CBRS solution for Fixed Wireless applications. The companies have been collaborating on this solution since the beginning of 2017. The result of their collaboration is a solution that is capable of delivering high volume of traffic using massive MIMO active antennas system, advance Beamforming techniques and LTE-Advanced CPE with roadmap support of Giga-bit CPE.

CBRS band is a shared spectrum band of 150MHz in 3.5GHz which was recently authorized by FCC. This new band allows new players and existing players to introduce new services as well as to enhance existing services through the extension of coverage and very high throughput. To effectively leverage the CBRS shared spectrum, there is a need for an agile wide band radio, intelligent CPE and full deployment co-ordination which is achieved through Altiostar vRAN architecture.

Altiostar has been deploying vRAN solution to upgrade the aging LTE networks deployed by the initial wave of LTE rollouts by the network operators. The vRAN solution encompasses massive MIMO radios connected via IP or Ethernet fronthaul link. This facilitates aggregation of upper layer functions at an edge data center in an operator’s network. CBRS operators requiring tight management of their outdoor radio access network envisioned the possibility of using a vRAN architecture combined with massive MIMO radios and CPEs. Hence, Sercomm and Altiostar came forward to address this requirement by the operators.

Sercomm’s outdoor advanced LTE fixed wireless terminal is a power efficient and lightweight design that supports built-in 8Rx/4Tx high-gain antenna configuration that can carry up to 570 Mbps downlink and 30 Mbps uplink traffic with carrier aggregation, MIMO and higher modulation support. The terminal can be deployed in point-to-point or point-to-multipoint configuration and it supports multi PDNs. Sercomm has been actively involved in Fixed Wireless field trials for Rural Broadband with this product with leading operators on newly established CBRS spectrum.

The solution offers numerous technical and commercial benefits to the network operator. The use of the centralized co-ordination point for signaling plane as well as data forwarding plane between indoor small cell and macro cells improve performance of the system significantly for handover, inter-site carrier aggregation, UL-CoMP, eICIC and even multi-connectivity required for LTE-5G interworking. The aggregated site running on carrier-grade NFVI also provides Multi-Edge Compute (MEC) features such as video caching and streaming, TCP optimization, traffic shaping for the small cells deployed indoors for residential and enterprise users.

“Our collaboration with Sercomm demonstrates the power of the open vRAN ecosystem that Altiostar has committed to build, addressing CBRS market in a more elegant and cost-effective way. The two companies are committed to provide our joint customers the convenience of a single supplier while offering the best-of-breed technologies from two companies using open interfaces, said Kuntal Chowdhury, VP Product Management at Altiostar”.

Sercomm and Altiostar will demonstrate this solution at Amdocs’ booth #3G10, Hall 3 during MWC 2018 in Fira Gran Via, Barcelona.

“We are pleased to collaborate with Altiostar for an end-to-end Wireless Rural Broadband Solutions on CBRS band. Interoperability is crucial to successful deployment at this early stage of CBRS initiatives and this milestone further demonstrates Sercomm leadership and commitment to continually bring advanced CPE for Fixed Wireless applications. We look forward to continue our work to advanced LTE and 5G applications, said Ben Lin, Executive VP at Sercomm”.
