FREMONT, Calif., March 08, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Streaming Video Alliance (the Alliance), an industry forum comprised of leading companies from the online video ecosystem, convenes today in Silicon Valley at Western Digital’s Milpitas, California, campus. Highlights from the agenda include a keynote from Chris Bergey, GM Embedded Systems Group at Western Digital; a presentation from the Alliance’s Executive Director Jason Thibeault about online video trends and industry happenings for 2018 and beyond, including the global impact of 5G, blockchain, machine learning, AI, automation and more; a talk on Unified End-to-End Quality-of-Experience Monitoring, Optimization and Management Framework by Professor Zhou Wang, University Research Chair from the University of Waterloo, Canada; and the introduction of new Open Caching specifications.

“We’re happy to welcome NTT East and Beamr to the ranks of the Alliance. 2018 is off to a strong start, and we look forward to diving into today’s meeting,” Thibeault said. “As the Alliance enters its fourth year, I’m inspired by the contributions of our members and the impact we’ve made to date. That being said, there’s still a lot of work ahead of us, and I’m confident that our Q1 discussions will help lay a successful groundwork for our 2018 initiatives.”

“The next wave of streaming video technology is upon us, and the high bit-rate requirements of features like VR, AR, 360 live video, HDR and expanded color space require that the industry scale the performance, bandwidth and intelligence of the streaming infrastructure,” said Scott Vouri, VP Strategy and Business Development, Client Solutions, Western Digital. “Our membership in the Alliance and collaboration in the Working Groups help us solve these challenges for our customers.”

Today’s meeting will also introduce new Open Caching Specifications, including the Open Caching Content Management Functional Specification and Open Caching Logging Integration Functional Specification. This brings to five the total number of Open Caching Specifications published. In addition, both the Advertising WG and the VR Study Group have documents in Straw Ballot for member review.

Throughout the year, the Alliance will be participating in industry events around the globe. During NAB in April, the Alliance and Light Reading are cosponsoring a breakfast seminar, “The Reality of VR Video.” The seminar, which takes place on April 8, 2018 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, will examine the potential of VR video and the hurdles to bringing top-quality VR video to consumers.
