Wonder Workshop Launches Sketch Kit - Robot Accessory that Gives Kids the Ability to Create Artwork with Code

New accessory for Dash and Cue robots inspires children to code and learn by combining Art with STEM

SAN MATEO, Calif., April 24, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Wonder Workshop today announced the availability of Sketch Kit, a new accessory for its iconic Dash and Cue robots that brings kids’ imagination to life with the ability to create artwork by programming robots. Available now on makewonder.com, Sketch Kit attaches directly to the robots, and comes with six color markers, dozens of drawing missions to challenge kids of all levels, and an optional whiteboard drawing surface. Art is a great visual outlet for programming robots, inspiring children to challenge themselves. Since the Dash robot started shipping in 2014, children have been attaching markers to their robots to create drawings with their code. When Wonder Workshop studied these attempts, they discovered the need for an add-on that provided the ability to create accurate representations of children’s imagination, and give them more control of the markers. Designers and engineers at Wonder Workshop created Sketch Kit to solve this problem, knowing that Dash and Cue robots are capable of drawing with accuracy, and manipulating the markers with dexterity.

Sketch Kit snaps on to the base of Dash and Cue robots, and a connector to the robots’ head enables the manipulation of the markers. By placing the marker tip at the center of the robot's base, it allows for accurate control while moving, turning, and spinning. Sketch Kit enables the robots to pick up and place the pen tip on command, resulting in unlimited capabilities for design. Dash and Cue robots' sensors are used to control the movement, ensuring accuracy of drawing. As a benchmark, when the Dash or Cue robots are programmed to draw a hexagon of 40cm side on the Wonder Whiteboard mat on a flat surface, the robot will be off by less than 1cm by the end of the drawing.

“Sketch Kit brings an entirely new experience to Dash and Cue robots, and we are excited to see the masterpieces coded by children,” said Vikas Gupta, co-founder and CEO of Wonder Workshop. “We were inspired by the creativity of children around the world experimenting by attaching markers with various homegrown contraptions to Dash and Cue robots. We hope the freedom unlocked by Sketch Kit will, in turn, inspire young inventors and creators around the world.”

Sketch Kit programming capabilities are available as a free update on Wonder Workshop’s Blockly and Wonder apps for Dash, and the Cue app for Cue.

Sketch Kit is now available for $39.99 at makewonder.com and Amazon. Customers can purchase the Wonder Whiteboard Mat ($99.99) at makewonder.com and Amazon, or the Sketch Kit and Wonder Whiteboard Mat bundle ($129.99) at makewonder.com. Sketch Kit is compatible with Dash ($149.99) and Cue ($199.99) and can be purchased separately at makewonder.com and Amazon.
