VANCOUVER, British Columbia, May 04, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is pleased to announce its three Media Fellowship recipients for 2018-19.

Each year, the APF Canada Media Fellowship Program, supported in part by Cathay Pacific Airways, offers Canadian journalists the opportunity to spend time in Asia researching and preparing stories for Canadian audiences. The goal of the program is to help Canadian journalists become better informed about this dynamic part of the world in order to write and broadcast insightfully on Asia and the Canada-Asia relationship.

Two of this year’s $10,000 Fellowships are funded in part by Hong Kong’s award-winning airline, Cathay Pacific Airways, which will provide Premium Economy Class flights from Vancouver or Toronto to Hong Kong and beyond to one destination in Asia or Mainland China, plus a two-night stay in Hong Kong for two Fellows. All three Media Fellowships are valued at up to C$10,000 for in-country travel and expenses and coverage of transpacific travel.

The 2018-19 Media Fellows are:

  • Emma Graney is a multi-award-winning journalist and podcaster currently working as a provincial affairs reporter with the Edmonton Journal.  Emma will travel to China to explore the Asian economic superpower’s race to be the world leader in Artificial Intelligence, and the opportunities and implications that presents for Canada’s AI startups and innovation clusters.

  • Althia Raj is HuffPost Canada’s Ottawa bureau chief, and a multi-media writer and editor. Althia will travel to China to explore the country’s water security issues, including scarcity, pollution, the impacts of urbanization and industrialization, and the toxic effects of the water-intensive textiles industry. She will also explore China’s efforts to clean up its contaminated waterways, including the Pearl River basin, where most of the world’s blue jeans are made.

  • Roberta Staley is a magazine editor, writer and independent filmmaker based in Vancouver. Roberta will travel to Pakistan, a country with social, political, economic and human rights challenges, to research and write about maternal and infant health, the rights of women, girls, and the LGBT community, and the game-changing China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
