Rubicon Labs to Unveil Security and Control Platform for Medical Devices – Including Dialysis Machines and Insulin Pumps -- at IoT World

Rubicon and DSPC to showcase secure control of extremely low power IoT devices

SAN FRANCISCO, May 09, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Rubicon Labs, a leader in providing secure identity, trust and control services for the Internet of Things (IoT) markets, today announced the first public demonstration of its Rubicon Identity Service to secure medical devices, specifically dialysis machines and insulin pumps. As part of the demonstration at IoT World in Santa Clara, California on May 15-17, Rubicon Labs will showcase the use of its Software as a Service (SaaS) Platform to authorize usage of medical devices in specific geographic regions. In addition, Rubicon will send -- in real time – device-specific, over-the-air software updates that can be controlled based on doctor, patient, or device-specific requirements.

Also at IoT World, Device & System Platform Development Center Co., Ltd.(DSPC), a leading Japanese supplier of very low power IoT devices, will partner with Rubicon Labs to securely connect, control and manage industrial sensors with the Rubicon Identity Service.

Visitors can see the demos and learn more about how Rubicon’s SaaS platform secures both medical devices and extremely low power devices in Booth #706.

The IoT Challenge
It’s estimated that one trillion sensors will be deployed by 2023. These sensors and devices are fundamental to predictive analysis, seamless medical care, and artificial intelligence. To be effective the data must be trusted and devices secure. Medical devices in particular offer opportunities for patients to lower costs, streamline diagnostics, and simplify care. However, for a doctor to prescribe based on diagnostic data, they must authenticate the data and device; the patient must trust the data is protected, and the medical device manufacturers need to control software updates, device authentication, and device lifecycle management. These techniques will all be showcased in Rubicon’s IoT World demo.

In addition, as sensors proliferate, battery technology is not scaling in cost, longevity, or performance for these devices. DSPC brings to market critical energy harvesting technology in a hardware platform easily integrated into a variety of IoT markets. Using the Rubicon Identity Service enables these very low-cost, small sensor nodes to be secured and controlled.

“As the 2016 Mirai botnet proved, it doesn’t matter how small an IoT device is, any device, even small health monitors, can be a point of entry for an attacker to target a larger network or enterprise,” said Richard Egan, CEO Rubicon Labs. “Rubicon provides security and identity as a service from the cloud down to the smallest of devices. The development with medical manufacturers and with DSPC proves the Rubicon Identity Agent will fit into the smallest IoT device and protocol.”

“Data security is one of the biggest concerns for IoT system users.  We are pleased to demonstrate the smallest footprint, secured edge device with Rubicon's technology. We are working with very low energy systems and it works with battery free, energy harvesting technology,” said Itaru Hatano, CEO DSPC.

About Rubicon Labs
Rubicon Labs provides trust, identity, and security for connected IoT devices. The company believes secure identities are foundational to help the IoT market achieve its massive potential.  Rubicon Labs has created a unique platform to provide security and identity seamlessly from the cloud to gateway and even to the most resource-constrained IoT endpoints.

Rubicon Labs’ Identity Platform is delivered as Software as a Service (SaaS), providing developers with a simple path to authenticate, secure and control their devices. Once identity is provisioned, data can be encrypted and signed, devices can be controlled with policies and over-the-air updates can be targeted to unique devices.

Rubicon Labs is based in San Francisco and operates an R&D lab in Austin, Texas. The company is venture-backed by Third Point Ventures, Pelion Venture Partners, and Akamai Technologies.
