Flint Hills Resources Awards $147,500 Annual Scholarships to Texas Students


HOUSTON, May 23, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Flint Hills Resources has honored 12 students from six Houston-area high schools with scholarships through their 2017-2018 Outstanding Student Scholarship Program. The students were selected based on their teacher’s nomination, an essay on principled entrepreneurship, and their plans to pursue a career in the field of science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM).  A total of $18,000 in scholarships was awarded in Houston during the month of May. Over $147,000 has been awarded throughout the state of Texas this year by all Flint Hills Resources divisions.

“Our Texas students have faced more than the average amount of challenges this past year with the impact of Hurricane Harvey. It remains at the forefront of our efforts to support these students in their drive to continue their education,” said James Rhame, site manager for Flint Hills Resources Houston. “We wish these recipients continued success in maximizing their capabilities.”

Congratulations to the Flint Hills Resources 2017-2018 honorees: Jose Madrigal and Ruben Tellez (Cesar E. Chavez High School), Eddie Mendoza and Philip Villarreal (Charles H. Milby High School), Jessica Hahn and Wendell Safford (Deer Park High School - Wolters Campus), Virginia Hinds and Hector Martinez (La Porte High School), Alejandro Torres and Liliana Zapata (Pasadena High School), and Alexander Solares and Oscar Rodriguez (Sam Rayburn High School).

Since the program’s inception in 2013, a total of $632,500 has been awarded to high school students across Texas. Recipients can use their scholarships at any university, college or trade school of their choice.
