The Craig McConnon Group hosted an epic eight hour DJ duel in Galway, Republic of Ireland, on the bank holiday. The event in the university town attracted a number of rising stars as well as some brand new names on the DJ scene. “We decided to do something different, so we made a competition out of it,” says Craig McConnon. “The response was huge. Over 50 aspiring DJs applied to compete and we opened the floor to 16 of the best in an all-out party that saw over 300 revellers pack the venue.”
Craig McConnon says the format of the competition involved DJs competing in rounds of half an hour each, going solo and then B2B. The top four performers made it to the final round which lasted over an hour as party goers went wild with excitement and anticipation. “This was a fun event, it was good sport in good spirit,” said Craig McConnon. “Our top DJs judged the winners of each round by audience response and it was all in good fun.”
Craig McConnon himself attended the event and was part of the judging panel. “It wasn't hard work,” he says. “I had a really great time and actually might have learnt a thing or two. The scene is the same but different and overall it was a great experience and well worth the trip. Time was pretty tight as my schedule is insane right now, but have no fear, I'm still going strong.”
Craig McConnon announced that the ultimate winners in the DJ Duel were Missy Moo in the techno category and DJ Rokya in the house category. “We split the competition in the end. They were both just so good. The audience response was amazing to both of them so we just had to pick two winners,” said Craig McConnon. “We're guessing they'll both be going places now. They've made their names in Galway and will reap the rewards.”
The Craig McConnon Group was surprised at the talent that was exposed in the previously unexplored town of 80 000. “We were really pleasantly surprised,” said Craig McConnon. “The DJs were all pretty new to the scene but they were really good. The spread seemed pretty even between genders and styles and there was a huge reaction to just about everyone. Seems Ireland's on a high!” The response was so positive that the Craig McConnon Group is considering adding at least one Galway DJ to their lineup for local events.
Craig McConnon hinted that the Craig McConnon Group may be looking at local venues for regular events, but he's keeping the contenders under wraps for now. “It certainly looks promising and there's plenty of support with all the young people in the town,” Craig McConnon said. “But we're really tied up with our new venues so when – if – we choose a spot we'll have to make sure it's totally up to scratch. We don't skimp.”
The Craig McConnon Group has had quite a few interested callers enquiring about DJs for upcoming events from weddings to 21st birthday parties and even one retirement party that has big plans for the lucky retiree. “We really laughed at that one,” said Craig McConnon. “But we pride ourselves on flexibility and these guys want something really different and unique. Not the usual teacups and saucers!” Offering events in the Republic of Ireland requires quite some organisation, but Craig McConnon is confident the Craig McConnon Group will be up to it in the coming months. “Watch this space!” as he always says.
