Electrify America to energize U.S. highways, selects Black & Veatch for ultra-fast EV charging station program

National network expands access, addresses ‘range anxiety’ through hundreds of high-powered DC charging stations

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., June 07, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Black & Veatch announced today it will design and construct hundreds of sites for Electrify America’s high-powered DC Fast Chargers, part of a nationwide network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations that will dramatically reduce charging times and raise convenience for EV consumers.

Electrify America’s ultra-fast electric vehicle chargers are the first certified cooled-cable 150 to 350 kilowatt (kW) chargers deployed in North America, capable of delivering enough energy for up to 20 miles of range per minute – or seven times faster than today’s 50kW DC chargers. Black & Veatch is currently supporting site development services across the U.S., as well as performing engineering, permitting and construction of DC Fast Charger electric car charging station sites in the Pacific Northwest, Northern California, Southern California, Mountain, Central, Midwest, Southeast Central and Southeast regions.

“Our approach to zero-emissions vehicle infrastructure means we can work on multiple sites concurrently and efficiently, providing greater speed to market,” said Dean Siegrist, Associate Vice President of Black & Veatch’s Transformative Technologies business. “The results are project efficiency for Electrify America and greater options for EV drivers.”

Electrify America selected Black & Veatch because of its experience completing the engineering, permitting, and construction for hundreds of EV charging station sites across the United States. Black & Veatch has over 100 years of engineering expertise, working relationships with many of the nation’s utility companies, and thorough understanding of electric utility and local jurisdiction compliance requirements.

“Our solid foundation and reputation as a company has led to innovative projects in energy storage and high-powered charging infrastructure for consumer vehicles, fleets, and public transportation,” said Richard Horne, Director of Project Execution for Black & Veatch’s Transformative Technologies business. “We are committed to helping our clients reshape transportation.”

“Black & Veatch has a proven track record in building electric vehicle infrastructure around the globe,” said Brendan Jones, chief operating officer, Electrify America. “We are pleased to have their leadership in the installation of our charging stations to rapidly expand the use of zero emissions vehicles in the United States.”

Electrify America, which is investing $2 billion over 10 years in electric vehicle infrastructure and education, plans to deploy more than 2,000 chargers across 484 sites in 17 metropolitan areas and on highways in 39 states, as part of its Cycle One investment. All the chargers will be installed or under development by the end of the cycle in June 2019. Stations will be located at convenient EV charging stops with access to retail, gas stations, parking and other facilities.
