Plan Advisors shake up the top list for DC service providers

NEW YORK, June 19, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Over 475 DC focused Plan Advisors voted on their top picks for Record Keepers, DCIO providers, and Broker Dealers in Institutional Investor’s second annual DC Industry Leaders survey.

Competition around the top spots was intense with some previous year winners bumped from the podium as the DC market continues to evolve and institutionalize.

Merrill Lynch retained its place among Plan Advisors as the top record keeper in the space with Voya leaping into second place from sixth last year, a result of the significant investments the company has put into its platform over the last few years.

J.P. Morgan took the top DCIO provider spot just beating out Blackrock in a close ranking race. Legg Mason, the previous year’s top DCIO provider moved into fourth place, while Allianz dropped out of the top ten.

On the broker dealer side, it was nearly business as usual with four of the top five spots the same as last year and CAPTRUST holding the top broker dealer spot for two years in a row. The big shake-up in rankings happened in second place where Morgan Stanley fell from second into sixth place replaced by Pensionmark.

“Some providers have retrenched after coming to the realization that they don’t have the scale for a profitable market position,” said Howard Tang, Product Director at II Research. “It has led to volatility in the leader rankings with companies completely dropping off despite strong showings last year. It’s an incredible opportunity for some to grab market share while competitors waffle.”

The DC Industry Leaders survey was focused on the opinions from Institutional Plan Advisors, those who manage more than $100 million in DC assets with multiple plans. Of the IPAs who responded, more than 150 managed at least $1 billion in DC assets, while over 320 managed between $100 million to $1 billion in DC assets. Over half the voters managed 50 DC plans or more.

The final report, available for purchase, will have more than 13,150 votes on Record Keepers, 7,200 votes on DCIO Providers, and 6,400 votes on Broker Dealers broken down across 38 different attributes. Peer comparison and performance benchmarking are available on different areas of service, AUM bands, and types of advisor fee structures.

The report will also include hundreds of responses on key market trends, such as which Record Keepers and target date funds Plan Advisors want to drop and which Record Keepers and DCIO Providers best improve plan outcomes.
