NEW YORK, June 29, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Sara Safder, MD was recently selected to the American Health Council’s Board of Physicians for her outstanding contributions to the medical field. A radiologist at Lakeland Regional Health — a facility within the Radiology and Imaging Specialties network — in Windermere, Fla., Dr. Safder conducts research to improve her patients’ quality of life. While she has currently held that position for over one year, she has spent 12 years in the healthcare industry expanding her skills and knowledge in spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), neuroradiology and radiology.
Dr. Safder decided to pursue a career in the radiology field after witnessing several family members combat chronic disease. She wanted to join the medical field to create a positive and lifelong impact on people’s lives. She enrolled at Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and earned a medical degree in 2006. She immediately completed both an internship at the West Virginia University in 2007, and a residency in radiology from 2007 to 2011. By 2012, she finished a fellowship in neuroradiology at the University of North Carolina Hospital.
At Lakeland Regional Health, Dr. Safder performs between 150 to 200 studies daily, including neuro MRI scans and outpatient MRI, brain and spine scans. Her impressive work has been highlighted in several publications, including in “Vascular Imaging of the Central Nervous System: Physical Principles, Clinical Applications and Emerging Techniques,” Chapter 3D Time of Flight Imaging with Joanna Ramalho and Mauricio Castillo — the latter whom she worked under at the University of North Carolina Hospital — on March 2014. She published “Imaging Findings in Cerebroretinal Microangiography with Calcifications and Cysts” in the American Society of Neuroradiology Excerpta Extraordinaire in 2012. She is credited as first author in the American Journal of Neurology, “The Black Turbinate Sign: An Early MR Imaging Finding of Nasal Mucormycosis,” 31: 771-774, April 2010. She served as a speaker at the Radiological Society of North America’s Case of the Day event, where she spoke about B-Cell Lymphoma of the scalp.
Dr. Safder is a member of the American Board of Radiology, the American College of Radiology and Muslim Women’s Organization’s Orlando chapter. Additionally, she contributes to several charitable organizations including the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, UNICEF, the Cancer Society, IMANA Medical Relief and White Coats Syrian Refugees. In her spare time, she enjoys running half marathons with her husband, especially ones that benefit charities. She previously won first place in a 5K run, a feat she considers a personal achievement. Dr. Safder also enjoys spending time with her family, traveling and reading, as she belongs to a monthly book club.
With a rewarding and successful career at hand, Dr. Safder plans to continue to excel in her career. She attributes her success to her hard work, her parents’ instilment of a strong work ethic, consistency and having a supporting family and husband. In the next five years, she plans to manage the clinic where she currently works as well as pursue more educational opportunities, lecturing and research.
