LivingHomes wins 2018 Architizer A+Award

LivingHomes’ Cherokee Residence Receives Jury and People’s Choice Awards

RIALTO, Calif., Aug. 01, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- LivingHomes, one of the top sustainable design firms in the nation, today announced it has been named the recipient of the Jury and the People’s Choice 2018 Architizer A+Awards in the “Concepts Plus-Architecture +Prefab” category for its 2017 Cherokee Residence in Los Angeles.

The Architizer A+Awards is the largest awards program focused on promoting and celebrating the year’s best architecture and products. Its mission is to nurture the appreciation of meaningful architecture in the world and champion its potential for a positive impact on everyday life. The Jury awards are judged by a panel of more than 400 distinguished luminaries and thought leaders from fields as diverse as fashion, publishing, product design, real estate development and tech. The People’s Choice awards are chosen by public online voting.

“We’re honored to have received these awards from Architizer A+,” said LivingHomes CEO Steve Glenn. “The A+ Award is one of the top international competitions for architecture and we really appreciate the recognition by a jury of world-class design professions and by the voting public.”

The Cherokee Residence, featured on the May issue of Dwell Magazine, was built for Arrested Development, LEGO Batman and Flaked star Will Arnett and features a 3,975-square-foot L-shaped steel-frame, four bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms, a kitchen/dining area, living room, garage, glass staircase tower and guest wing. The mid-century modern inspired design, imagined by Ray Kappe FAIA, blurs the boundary between exterior and interior spaces while maintaining a strong sense of privacy and was customized to fit into a steeply sloping site with an infinity pool that drops off at the rear. Included within the design is an exterior garden, dividing the home into distinct zones. A site-built garage and guest suite are linked to the main house with a double-height kids playroom, and the large master suite and private deck face the pool and the spectacular Los Angeles sunsets.

The home was comprised of six modules on two levels that were built off-site in parallel to the site work, dramatically reducing the total construction time and minimizing both neighborhood disruption as well as overall building cost. It was delivered and assembled on site in a single day, with all landscaping, pool and finish work completed post-installation. The Cherokee Residence uses overhangs to emphasize the horizontality of the plane, while doubling as passive cooling for interior comfort. Its exposed steel frames, cedar and glass complement the simple exterior palette, assisting in the durability and timelessness of the home’s design. The residence’s simplistic color design is reflected internally by utilizing the same exterior wood, natural fibers, a built-in fireplace, high-efficiency energy and water fixtures, volatile organic compound (VOC)-free finishes and Cradle-to-Cradle certified materials.

The Cherokee Residence features interior design by ReddyMade and landscape design by Mike Fiore of Fiore Landscape Design and site construction by Pat Deegan of VRB Construction. The residence will be included in the Architizer A+ annual book, published in partnership with Phaidon Press. Visit https://awards.architizer.com/winners-gallery/ for a complete list of winners.
