Fairfax, Aug. 10, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Adm. Michael S. Rogers, USN (Ret.), has been named the recipient of the 2017 David Sarnoff Award, which recognizes individuals who have made lasting and significant contributions to global peace and security. Recent winners have included Alfred Grasso, president and CEO, The MITRE Corporation; Rep. Michael J. Rogers (R-MI); Gen. Keith B. Alexander, USA, former commander, U.S. Cyber Command, and director, National Security Agency/Chief, Central Security Service; and James R. Clapper Jr., former Director of National Intelligence.

AFCEA’s most prestigious honor, the Sarnoff Award salutes individuals who have demonstrated a sustained and personal commitment to information sharing and collaboration across traditional and nontraditional boundaries through communications, electronics and information technology. In particular, it honors their role in moving the world toward a stronger, more secure future. 

Prior to his retirement earlier this year, Adm. Rogers served as the second commander of the U.S. Cyber Command and concurrently the 17th director of the National Security Agency/chief of the Central Security Services. Since becoming a flag officer in 2007, the admiral also served as the director for intelligence for both the Joint Chiefs of Staff and U.S. Pacific Command, and as commander, U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet. 

Adm. Rogers is a distinguished graduate of the National War College and a graduate of highest distinction from the Naval War College. He also is a Massachusetts Institute of Technology Seminar XXI fellow and Harvard Senior Executive in National Security alum and holds a Master of Science degree in national security strategy. 

Adm. Rogers has supported the AFCEA community in numerous ways, including as a speaker at various association events where he emphasized the value of constant collaboration among government, industry and academia. “If we are going to defend the systems of the private sector within our nation, we’ve got to bring together the private sector and the public sector in a way that traditionally we have not seen. We’ve got to do this in real time. We’ve got to do it on an enduring basis. It cannot be that the only time we interact with each other is when things are going wrong,” he stated. 

Sarnoff was an early pioneer in radio. He quickly rose to prominence in the newly developing American telecommunications industry. During World War II, Sarnoff witnessed first-hand how conversation and cooperation between government and industry in times of peace would help ensure effective communications during war. Sarnoff is a Founding Father and Charter Member of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association. 

Adm. Rogers will be honored at the 2018 Sarnoff Award Dinner on September 20 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, Washington, D.C. Tickets for the event are available online.
