Springfield, MA, Sept. 24, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Players suffering from a schneid (“a series of losses”) in SCRABBLE may be in luck.  Today, under license from Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS), Merriam-Webster, the dictionary company helping millions of people understand and use language better, has released the Sixth Edition of The Official SCRABBLE Players Dictionary, providing players hundreds of new ways to score big in SCRABBLE.  EMOJI, FACEPALM, and the two-letter word EW join over 300 new words added to the dictionary, making them officially playable in the game.

Players will now be able to rack up points with a variety of words that have entered the language recently, including: bitcoin, hivemind, listicle, aquafaba, bibimbap, sriracha, puggle, beatdown, macaron, zomboid, sheeple, yowza, bokeh, and qapik, a Q word that can be formed without using the letter U.

See a larger selection of new words added—and their definitions—here.

“For a living language, the only constant is change. New dictionary entries reflect our language and our culture, including rich sources of new words such as communication technology and food terms from foreign languages,” says Peter Sokolowski, Editor at Large for Merriam-Webster. “The Official SCRABBLE Players Dictionary evolves to keep up with English as it is used today.”

“SCRABBLE has been a game night staple for 70 years, and we’re excited to bring the game into its next decade with hundreds of current words like facepalm and emoji,” says Jonathan Berkowitz, President, Hasbro Brands. “Additions like these will add a new layer of fun to game night, making game play even more entertaining and relevant.”

Entries in the new Sixth Edition feature a brief definition, a part-of-speech label, and inflected forms for fast, easy word validation. The new dictionary is approved for recreational and school use, and the new words from the Sixth Edition will be sanctioned for use in official club and tournament play in 2019.

New words are added to The Official SCRABBLE Players Dictionary only if they meet specific criteria as laid out in the game’s rules: words must be found in a standard dictionary and cannot be abbreviations, capitalized words, or words containing hyphens or apostrophes.  All words must also be between 2 – 8 letters in length.

Merriam-Webster’s Sixth Edition of The Official SCRABBLE Players Dictionary is available in paperback and hardcover formats in the United States and Canada wherever books are sold.  Digital versions of the dictionary are available online at www.merriam-webster.com/scrabble and will be available for iOS, Android, and Kindle this month.
