Cosemi Expands Family of Data Center Active Optical Cables

New SFP28 Addresses the Growing Need for Interconnects Supporting 25G Ethernet in Data Center Networking Applications

IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 24, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Cosemi Technologies Inc., a global leader in innovative, high-speed connectivity solutions, today announced the expansion of its family of data center active optical cables (AOCs) with the launch of its SFP28 (small form factor pluggable) cable. The data center AOC product family features the new SFP28 as well as the company’s existing 100G QSFP28, which is targeted to server-switch intra data center links. Cosemi will round out the product family with the launch of additional form factors, such as QSFP-DD, SFP-DD and OSFP, for a comprehensive data center offering.

Originally designed to support datacom and telecom applications by providing standard interfaces for the insertion and adaptation of pluggable modules, SFP sockets are now among the most common optical transceiver form factors – and are found in everything from Ethernet switches and routers to firewalls and network interface cards.

Driven by cloud and hyperscale data centers, the migration to 25G Ethernet server connectivity marches on. Enabling this movement is the SFP28 form factor, which was designed specifically for 25G signal transmission. New standards bring higher speeds and increased efficiencies, which require more flexible server-to-top-of-rack switch interconnects. Cosemi’s SFP28 AOCs provide a superior alternative to the direct-attach copper cables of the past. Offering more speed, bandwidth capacity and power efficiency than copper cables, Cosemi’s cables also bring plug-and-play simplicity, better EMI, improved bend radius and increased reach (up to 100 meters) – all while being substantially lighter and thinner than copper.

Fully compliant with IEEE Std. 802.3ba and IEEE Std. 802.3bj for 25G Ethernet applications, Cosemi’s new AOCs offer support for other data communication standards as well, including Infiniband and Fibre Channel. Interfaces including SAS, PCIe server I/O and CPRI are also supported.

“The growing number of 100G links deployed in hyperscale data centers can be credited to industry alignment with the 25G Ethernet Consortium,” noted Samir Desai, Cosemi’s senior VP of business development. “With scores of enterprise and mid-sized data centers continuing this upgrade cycle, the demand for 25G/100G interconnects shows no signs of diminishing any time soon.”

Cosemi began sampling of its SFP28 AOCs in July 2018, with general availability planned for Q4 2018. Key partners are currently evaluating the new cables. To learn more about Cosemi, please visit www.cosemi.com.
