PHOTO RELEASE--Ingalls’ Seventh Annual “5K on the Causeway” Raises $20,000 for Special Olympics


PASCAGOULA, Miss., Oct. 02, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Ingalls Shipbuilding division raised $20,000 for Special Olympics of Mississippi at the company’s seventh annual “5K on the Causeway.” The race was held Saturday on Singing River Island.

“We are extremely proud that this turned out to be another record-breaking year for this event,” said Edmond Hughes, Ingalls’ vice president of human resources and administration. “In the past seven years, we’ve raised close to $80,000 dollars, thanks to the ongoing support and athletic spirit of our employees, community and our sponsors. This is a cause close to the heart of our community, and we look forward to seeing more records broken in the future.”

More than 900 runners registered for the 2018 race. This year’s top male and female shipbuilders were Adam and Amanda Whitaker, a married couple who have worked at Ingalls for a combined 25 years of service. The overall winner was Josh Pittman of Ocean Springs.

Each 5K winner received a medal hand-designed by Special Olympics athletes. The race concluded with live music, free food provided by local vendors and kids’ activities all on Singing River Island.

In May, Ingalls donated $5,000 to athletes at the 2018 Special Olympics of Mississippi Summer Games, which were held at Keesler Air Force Base.
