CNL Announces Centre for Reactor Sustainability

Canada’s national nuclear laboratory discusses wide-range of speciality services to support sustainability of the global nuclear reactor fleet with world’s leading utilities

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 03, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), Canada’s premier nuclear science and technology organization, shared the launch of CNL’s Centre for Reactor Sustainability (CRS) with utilities from China, Korea, Japan, the United States and Canada, representing more than half of the world’s nuclear power plants, during a meeting of the 21st Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference in San Francisco.  The initiative brings together CNL’s broad research capabilities in support of the sustainable, long-term operations of the world’s fleet of more than 400 nuclear power reactors.

“CNL’s Chalk River Laboratories is recognized around the world for its work to support the life extension and efficiency of nuclear power reactors,” commented Mark Lesinski, CNL President and CEO. “CNL and the nuclear supply chain work together to deliver an integrated approach to reactor sustainability, leading to major costs savings and efficiency improvements for safe nuclear operations.”

Today, nuclear reactors around the world safely, cleanly and reliably provide over 10 per cent of global electricity. The Centre for Reactor Sustainability will help make nuclear power plants even more efficient and reliable, support reactor life extension and long term operation, and enable plant modernization through innovative technologies and inspection services.  CRS will leverage CNL’s specialized knowledge and experience to provide services to utilities and their suppliers in five key research areas:

  • Aging Management, including Post-Irradiation Examination
  • Fuel Characterization
  • Operational Support and Failure Response
  • Chemistry Control, Monitoring and Optimization
  • Specialized Inspection and Maintenance Tooling

“The nuclear industry continuously innovates to remain economically competitive.  CRS offers tools and expertise to solve the most difficult, specialized problems, and to enable reactor sustainability throughout the global nuclear industry," explained Dr. Corey McDaniel, Vice-President of Business Development at CNL.

“The word sustainability gets discussed often, but we are taking a holistic interpretation of the term,” added Dr. Kathryn McCarthy, Vice-President of Research & Development with CNL. “Sustainability is about more than licence renewal or licence extension; it’s about economic competitiveness as well.”

With over 60 years of experience conducting state-of-the-art research and development activities in support of the Canadian nuclear industry, CNL is well-positioned to help nuclear operators improve the economics of their power reactor fleet. CNL’s unique capabilities and facilities are at the core of the CRS initiative, providing nuclear operators with the resources of a national laboratory, delivered with the agility and speed demanded by today’s commercially-focused organizations.
