Arcadis and Benthem Crouwel Architects to transform San Jose’s Diridon Station

Station Will Become One of the Largest Transportation Hubs in North America

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 17, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Arcadis (EURONEXT: ARCAD) and Benthem Crouwel Architects have teamed with the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), City of San Jose, Caltrain and the California High Speed Rail Authority to reinvent Diridon Station — a major transportation hub in downtown San Jose.

By 2027, major transportation investments, including California High Speed Rail and the addition of Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and Caltrain service, will blend with existing bus transit and rail lines that include Capitol Corridor, Altamont Corridor Express, Amtrak, and VTA Light Rail — with room for current services to grow. In addition, the City’s adopted land use plan calls for substantial public and private development near the station, which will bring thousands of new jobs and residents to the area. This is likely to make Diridon Station one of the busiest intermodal stations in North America.

The Arcadis-Benthem Crouwel partnership marks the first step into the future, with the creation of the San Jose Diridon Station Integrated Station Concept Plan. This initial, $6.4 million phase of the project is expected to take 18 months to complete, and will accomplish the following:

  • Design an integrated multimodal facility that will provide seamless transfer between all modes of transportation.
  • Delineate the spatial needs of the station to support the rail and transit operations while focusing on the experience of the transit and station user.
  • Focus on the interaction and cohesiveness between transit systems, public space and private development.
  • Plan and design a station that will accommodate future capacity needs.
  • Emphasize regional interconnectivity to expand and enhance service.
  • Create an organizational/governance model for the partner agencies to design, build and operate the station.

Services as part of this contract include architecture, engineering, urban design, project management and consultancy. Arcadis will be responsible for overall project management, engineering and fostering collaboration among the many partners involved in the reinvention of Diridon Station. Benthem Crouwel Architects will be responsible for urban planning and architectural design of the new station. Arcadis and Benthem Crouwel Architects have a local office in San Jose, supported by their respective offices in the U.S. and The Netherlands.

The Arcadis-Benthem Crouwel approach to creating this plan is consistent with Arcadis’ integrated approach to transit-related developments, called Mobility-oriented Development, or MODe. The approach focuses on the integration of four key elements that bring value to transit hubs: connectivity, urban environment, equitable social place-making and economic development. Read the full 2018 MODe report for more information.

“San Jose is the 10th largest city in the United States and with the emerging public and private development, Diridon Station is set to become one of the busiest transit hubs in the nation,” said Steve Truman, Arcadis’ contract manager. “Arcadis is excited to once again team with Benthem Crouwel to prepare a cutting-edge, integrated roadmap for the future of Diridon Station.”

“In the past decade, an incredible redevelopment of the largest train stations of the Netherlands has been accomplished. The train stations of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague have been transformed into future-proof multimodal hubs,” explains Daniel Jongtien, partner at Benthem Crouwel Architects. “We have changed the perspective from infrastructure to passengers, from disconnected transit systems to integrated solutions. Arcadis and Benthem Crouwel have successfully collaborated on many projects. We can’t wait to take this joint experience to Silicon Valley.”
