Chip Downing Joins RTI to Lead Company’s Global Aerospace and Defense Market

Industry Luminary Brings Deep Embedded Industry Experience from Across the A&D Market

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 14, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Real-Time Innovations (RTI), the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) connectivity company, today announced that Chip Downing has joined the company as Senior Director of Aerospace and Defense (A&D). Downing will lead RTI’s business across applications within the A&D market and drive open architecture systems worldwide. RTI has a deep history in A&D. RTI’s software forms the core network architecture for most U.S. Navy surface ships, most unmanned vehicle programs and hundreds of other programs. RTI customers include all major defense suppliers including Airbus, Boeing, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin and General Atomics. Downing will drive the go-to-market strategy for RTI’s top A&D applications including avionics, training and simulation, unmanned vehicles and naval systems.

Downing joins RTI from Wind River Systems where he was responsible for business development for the company’s global A&D markets. During his 14-year Wind River tenure, design wins for certified avionics products grew to more than 500 projects. Downing has held previous leadership positions at Esterel Technologies, Validated Software, OnCore Systems and Mentor Graphics.

Downing was a pioneer in creating commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) solutions to safety standards including RTCA DO-178. He helped drive critical industry standards into the commercial and military aerospace market, such as ARINC 653 and the Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE).

Downing will extend RTI’s leadership deeper into FACE™. RTI has been an active member of the The Open Group FACE™ Consortium since 2010. RTI’s Connext DDS-based Transport Services Segment (TSS) provides a fast path to enable FACE and safety certification. Downing is the elected FACE Business Working Group (BWG) Chair. He also serves as Chair of the FACE Consortium BWG Outreach Subcommittee, promoting the FACE approach globally. With Downing’s new position and the company’s TSS product, RTI will stake out a clear leadership role in the future of aviation.

“Aerospace and Defense is RTI’s first major vertical market. Our initial market traction came when the U.S. Navy adopted the DDS standard for the most critical communications across the surface fleet. We have since grown to power over 1,000 mission-critical A&D and commercial applications,” said Stan Schneider, CEO at RTI. “We are thrilled to welcome Chip Downing to the RTI team to help us expand our A&D footprint globally. Chip is a true industry luminary; his knowledge and experience make him the ideal leader for this role.”

“As A&D systems continue to grow in complexity, RTI’s Connext DDS is the ideal solution to help manage this complexity, and create a foundation for rapidly and reliably inserting new capabilities,” said Chip Downing. “In addition, RTI’s latest product, RTI Connext DDS Secure, enables the global DDS community to design in robust OMG® DDS Security capabilities to provide authentication, access control, encryption and logging – critical components of robust system security strategies.”

At RTI, Downing’s responsibilities will include identifying new application opportunities, and driving standardization and consortia efforts. Downing will build upon the company’s market leadership and proven success in mission-critical deployments. He will add to RTI’s growing, deep expertise in A&D, building on RTI’s announcement of an advisory board including Thomas Baptiste, an expert in simulation.
