Altoros Releases 2018 NoSQL Performance Benchmark Comparing Couchbase Server, DataStax (Cassandra), and MongoDB

A new study by Altoros evaluated latency and throughput of the three leading NoSQL solutions under four typical enterprise workloads

Sunnyvale, Calif, Nov. 20, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Altoros, a consultancy focusing on research and development for Global 2000 organizations, today announced the results of its latest NoSQL performance benchmark report. The study analyzed the leading NoSQL systems—Couchbase Server, DataStax Enterprise, and MongoDB—and their performance under four different workloads.

Criteria essential for most enterprise deployments

More than four years ago, Altoros developed a scoring matrix and templates that can be reused by anyone for custom analysis of NoSQL systems.

In the “2018 NoSQL Performance Benchmark,” Altoros measured the relative performance in terms of latency and throughput achievable by each database. The evaluation was conducted on different cluster configurations—namely, on 4, 10, and 20 nodes, using the Yahoo! Cloud Serving Benchmark (YCSB), an open-source specification and program suite for evaluating retrieval and maintenance capabilities of computer programs.

“NoSQL databases were designed to cope with the scalability and agility challenges that modern applications face, and that relational databases were never intended to handle,” said Vladimir Starostenkov, R&D Engineer at Altoros. “Yet among the dozens of new-generation NoSQL solutions, each is capable of achieving different levels of performance and uptime for various workloads. With the rise in both data volumes and frequency with which data is accessed, enterprise organizations need to have an understanding of the comparative strengths and weaknesses of various NoSQL solutions. We developed this report to measure their relative performance."

It is rare that a NoSQL database could perfectly fit all the requirements of every use case, and the right solution for any organization depends on the specific criteria needed. Each solution exhibited strengths under various workloads.
