Franciscan Health Doctor Named Purdue Athletics Head Team Physician


WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana , Dec. 10, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Purdue University’s athletic squads have a new team member to assist in providing each student-athlete a state-of-the-art system of medical care.

Carly Day, MD, a member of Franciscan Physician Network, has been appointed Head Team Physician of Purdue. In that role, she will oversee all aspects of medical care for more than 500 student-athletes at the Big Ten Conference university.

Dr. Day will provide coverage for all 18 Purdue intercollegiate athletics programs: football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track & field/cross country, women’s volleyball and wrestling, as well as the spirit squad.

Dr. Day, who officially takes on her role Dec. 17, 2018, will oversee the provision of medical care to student-athletes on campus, including the referral of patients to healthcare facilities, specialists and diagnostic services, such as imaging and laboratory services. Additionally, she will provide medical supervision for the Purdue athletic trainers and physical therapists. Dr. Day will have an office and exam rooms at Mackey Arena and will maintain a student-athlete clinic Monday through Friday.

A native of Cleveland, Dr. Day most previously served as the head primary care physician at Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio. She also held an academic appointment of Clinical Associate Professor at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. She currently is a team physician for the United States U-20 women’s national soccer team.

Dr. Day received an undergraduate degree in Zoology (summa cum laude with honors) at Miami University in Ohio and earned her medical degree from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, where she completed a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She later completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

During her professional and academic career, Dr. Day has received numerous honors and accolades. In 2017, she was listed among “Top Doctors” by Cleveland Magazine. She’s a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American College of Sports Medicine, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and Cleveland Clinic Women’s Professional Staff Association.
