Students and Workers at Carleton University ‘Blackout’ Services to Show What Campus Will be like in the Future

Ottawa, April 03, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- 3 April 2019

OTTAWA—Today at Carleton University, all of the major student-run service centers on campus will be closed in a ‘campus blackout’ to illustrate the impacts of the Student Choice Initiative on campus life, student experience, and immense job losses across the post-secondary education sector.

The loss of these services would compound upon existing cuts to university funding, cuts to the Ontario Student Assistance Plan, and pressures around campus protest and dissent to devastate students and workers ability to engage with university and colleges spaces. The impact on wider civil society is immense and represents an explicitly political attack on our sector, our workers, and our students.

WHO: A coalition including the Ontario Public Interest Research Group (Carleton), CKCU FM, Graduate Students Association (Carleton) Inc, Carleton University Student Association Inc, the Canadian Federation of Students, the Charlatan, the Leveller and various student organizers.

WHAT: One day closure of most student organization spaces and businesses.

WHERE: Carleton University
