Calix Continues Innovation for First in Market CAF Performance Testing Solution

Enhanced services and dedicated Ookla® Speedtest servers give service providers more ways to achieve FCC compliance, with GigaCenter support coming in the Fall

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 14, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) today announced that the newly enhanced, end-to-end CAF performance testing functionality built into the Smart Home and Business solution is being pre-tested in numerous communications service provider (CSP) networks ahead of the FCC’s July 1, 2019 start date. Now with the ability to use dedicated Ookla servers, CSPs can test with multiple groups to determine which site selection option will provide optimal results. Newly enhanced CAF Performance Testing Managed Services delivers critical expertise with pre-testing protocols and assistance throughout the entire process to help demonstrate the desired results. Finally, adding to the GigaSpire family of testing clients, Calix Support Cloud customers will be able to include the GigaCenter family as a test client running in their existing end-to-end test solution starting in the Fall.

This first in market solution, launched in February 2019, provides a turnkey test architecture with servers available in all 16 FCC designated Internet Exchange Point (IXP) cities and includes access to a team of seasoned experts ready to help with performance test order, test architecture design, and preliminary data analysis. Calix encourages CSPs to start their pre-testing immediately to troubleshoot and prepare for compliance ahead of the FCC deadline.

“Calix has been a true partner throughout this process, working proactively to make it easy for us to get started and prepare early for our CAF performance testing requirements,” said Pritam Kerkar, CTO of the Montana-based Range Companies. “We were glad Calix partnered with Ookla, a world leader in performance testing, but we also wanted the ability to route traffic to our own Ookla server to test both options. We appreciate that Calix is constantly evolving this solution so we can ensure that we stay ahead of the requirements – even when they change.”

The new solution and managed services assure CSPs that they will have access to everything they need to be compliant by the deadline. Built on the EXOS-powered GigaSpire, the test client is built on the latest high-performance gateway chipset, capable of speed testing up to a gigabit, as mandated by the FCC order. CSPs can set tests to run on a minimal number of units initially to generate enough results to ensure initial compliance before expanding their testing parameters.

“The FCC has yet to offer any indication that the CAF testing deadline will change, so service providers need to prepare as though it is right on top of them,” said Skip Hirvela, vice president of sales for Calix. “Planning to have a solution in place by July 1 is insufficient, given the financial stakes these regional service providers face. Extensive pre-testing and troubleshooting are necessary to ensure compliance in order to avoid the harsh financial penalties associated with missing the deadline.”
